Excellent time for minorities and franchising

It’s been a real banner year for minorities: America’s first black president was inaugurated and this week, the first Latina, Sonia Sotomayor, was nominated for the Supreme Court. Equally there’s probably never been a better time for minorities in franchising, thanks to programs like the IFA’s MinorityFran.

Did you know the multi-cultural market is valued at nearly $2 trillion? That staggering sum shows just how much potential exists in franchising for minorities. For this reason, franchisors looking to expand their base of minority franchisees might be interested in the various initiatives being organized by MinorityFran.

In the coming weeks, the IFA’s Franchise Opportunities Seminars for Women and Minorities series will be visiting a number of American cities. There’s an event being held on June 17 in St. Louis and another in on June 23 in Canton, Ohio. The St Louis sessions will feature the St. Louis Minority Business Enterprise Center/Minority Business Development Agency. It will offer a great opportunity for local franchisors to consider how to expand their appeal to minority franchisees.

These minority outreach programs are one of the many initiatives that MinorityFran sponsor. Operating since 2006, MinorityFran connects minorities with exciting franchise opportunities. MinorityFran has a wide body contacts with the minority business world and partners with the Urban League, the Association of Small Business Development Centers, the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce, and the Minority Business Development Agency,to offer clear channels to qualified minority prospects interested in franchising

As the incomes of minorities grow and grow, there is no better time than right now to try and connect this growing demographic with an ideal franchise opportunity. Learn about MinorityFran here.

Free advice for franchisees

Franchise Direct is a great resource for advice on starting a franchise.

It’s a difficult decision and we will guide you every step of the way until you get your business off the ground. For people with questions about owning a franchise, every question you’ve ever needed answering is here. We also like to pass on pertinent advice when we come across it, which is why we thought this story in the Idaho Statesmen was of particular importance. Pete Gombart, CEO of Ballihoo, a marketing automation solutions business to franchise-based companies provided some of his experiences on working with the franchising industry. He had this bit of insight for new franchisees:

[T]he most important observation I’ve made in working with franchisees is that a franchise’s success is most highly correlated to the people who run it, and not necessarily to the national brand or system.

Gombart’s advice is to focus on the local market instead of getting too caught up in trying to implement a national system. That’s sound advice, and to that end, franchisees might be interested in some research on advertising in the soft economy. A new study by Ad-ology says that 48% of Americans think that a  business’s failure to advertise is an indicator that the business struggling. We all know that success is a contagious, and perhaps this study shows that keeping a presence in public advertising spaces does a lot to spread positivity. It’s an important thing for small franchisees to consider as budgets tighten. If you have any questions about franchising, don’t be afraid to ask in the Comments section below.
