We often celebrate the long history of food franchises, who have stayed in business for decades and altered the shape of franchising forever. Perhaps we don't give franchises from less glamorous sectors the credit they deserve.
Consider the success of 7-11, which is celebrating its 84th birthday this year. Perhaps no franchise has had a greater impact on its industry than 7-11. It is impossible to think of convenience stores without 7-11. Their brand is synonymous with the convenience store concept. It's remarkable to think of one mom-and-pop convenience store going global 84 years later.
7-11 started in 1927 in Dallas. Its first 24-hour store was opened in Austin in 1962 and within a few years, 24-hour 7-11's were up and running in Fort Worth and Las Vegas. To celebrate their 84th anniversary, 7-11 gave away free Slurpees in a store in the 11 Mile outside Detroit. We commend them on their great success and look forward to their 85th anniversary celebrations.
