Recently, we were able to catch up with Judy Scott, franchise director for The Zoo Health Club, and she gave us an update on the fitness franchise and why, for some current franchisees, one unit isn’t enough.
Through three quarters of the year, how has 2015 been for the fitness franchise industry?
The fitness franchise industry for 2015 has been going well. 2015 has been showing solid signs of growth both in club memberships and franchise sales.
Some people searching for franchises think gym franchises are too expensive, how does The Zoo Health Club model battle that perception?
When buying a big box fitness franchise costs can become expensive. The Zoo Health model stays within 7,000 to 10,000 sq. feet keeping the overhead costs in the moderate range but still maximizing membership and personal training sales.
What separates the Zoo Health Club from the other fitness franchises?
The Zoo Health Club is a great brand using bright and beautiful colors, and having a perfect size model, layout and equipment. The Zoo name is well recognized and the Zoo Health Clubs have capitalized on the Zoo name. We feel the “Zoo” name is unique, and is being advertised in every city and state.
What kind of business experience should a prospective franchisee have before becoming a Zoo Health franchisee?
We have put people into business with no business or fitness business experience, people that have never owned their own business and people that have not exercised all their lives. The wonderful thing about buying a franchise is that the new franchisee taps into the Zoo franchise system. The closer the system is followed the bigger the franchisee’s success can be.
Can a franchisee run a Zoo Health franchise in a semi-absentee fashion at first, if he/she isn't ready to make the jump into full-time franchise ownership at once?
Yes, but it is important to find a good sales manager to operate the club. Our corporate support department can help with the hiring and training of this individual.
Looking ahead, what are your growth goals for 2016?
We are looking forward to a great 2016! Our goal is to open 24 new Zoo Health Clubs. We have been making a lot of positive changes from new websites and lead systems to enhanced marking with social media.
[In addition], franchisees are excited about the Zoo brand. 25% of our existing franchisees are ready to open their 2nd and 3rd locations. This will help fuel 2016 franchise sales.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
The club membership sales and personal training revenue is up for 2015 and the franchisees feel 2016 will be even better. There is no better time to get into the fitness industry and no better time to buy your first Zoo Health Club franchise. Let us help you build a successful business and in the health club business.
