Friday Franchising News - April 29

Breakfast is Boss

The most important meal of the day has seen gains in popularity in recent years. This means it’s never been a better time to start the day off properly. This week in Friday Franchising we see the proven power of breakfast to invigorate sales and wake up tired menus. Grab a cup of your favorite blend and read on to find out how franchises are embracing the need to compete in the breakfast sector.

Subway Rewards Early Birds BOGO Breakfast

Subway is bringing in the month of May with a special treat for early risers. Guests who visit participating Subway locations will enjoy a free 6-inch Subway breakfast sandwich with the purchase of a handcrafted sub sandwich before 9 a.m.. Guests will be able to choose from all of Subway’s breakfast sandwiches, including Applewood Smoked Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Steak, Egg & Cheese. Subway is offering this morning incentive to raise awareness of the versatility that their robust breakfast menu offers. Starting Sunday, the franchise will spread the word in a multi-platform campaign, “Déjà Vu” utilizing primetime broadcasts.

Dunkin Donuts Tests New Premium Menu Contenders

America’s quick serve coffee and doughnut franchise is planning to branch out with new premium menu items to tempt customers. Following a year of slower sales due to stiff competition in the breakfast arena, Dunkin’ is taking cues from McDonald’s by exploring fresh menu options. The standout items include a chicken & waffle sandwich and a Belgian waffle breakfast sandwich. Wash it down with a cold brew coffee and a side of sausage breakfast bites. These items are currently being tested in select areas across the country to see how the public reacts to slightly fancier fare.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Announces Line of Edible Coffee Treats

You don’t have to visit the popular coffee and doughnut chain to get your coffee fix now. Krispy Kreme has unveiled a new line of Coffee Thins that are bite size treats for on the go.  Coffee Thins come in three classic Krispy Kreme flavors: Original Glazed, Caramel Macchiato and Cappuccino. The edible coffee-infused innovations will be available at large retailers including Wal-Mart, Food Lion and Southeast Circle K. This launch is part of an effort to innovate beyond their coffee and doughnut staples with fresh takes on the classics.

McDonald’s Breakfast Gives Boost

We recently covered the newly expanded menu of McDonald’s breakfast. The numbers are in and breakfast is boss. The McDonald’s Corporation reported a 35% increase in profits in the quarter ending March 31. This unexpectedly large gain is credited to the decision last fall to sell certain breakfast items all day. After a slump, this marks the third consecutive quarter of positive results for the company. Sales in stores open at least a year gre 6.2% across the country, surpassing Wall Street Expectations. McDonald’s plans to keep this momentum up, with objectives focused on local market insights and a decision to source cage-free eggs.
