The advent of digital technology has certainly changed the world. I would say that a greater generation gap exists than ever before between people who grew up in the analogue world and those who only knew digital.
Simply put, these people are looking to redefine the very concept of work. The drurgery of the 9-5 is really no longer acceptable. These are people looking to redefine the practical conception of what a job is. Luckily Intuit's Fast Track blog recently published a post that offers some helpful advice for anyone unsure exactly how to deal with millenials within their business organization.
They offer 5 simple steps:
- Provide constant feedback
- Establish a reverse mentoring relationship
- Provide a work/life balance
- Challenge them
- Make them work in teams
Some of this might sound obvious, but it isn't. Millenials want to share what they know with an older generation. Just because they're very fond of social networking doesn't mean they're lazy. If anything they're looking to inject more creativity into the chosen profession. It's an important to harness that spark. That will ultimately provide the difference between whether that young employee starts a long career with your franchise.
