Maui Wowi Hawaiian is one of the world’s largest concessionaires, with more than 450 operating units in seven countries and an online store. This summer, the brand caught the attention of a few media outlets for its growth into unexpected places.
Cooling Off with a Tropical Drink
Just before the Fourth of July, Mike Weinberger, CEO of Maui Wowi, set up his tiki bar in the Colorado’s Best studio at Colorado’s CW 2 and let the hosts taste a few of the most popular flavors of the brand’s tropical smoothies. Pina colada was a hit, as well as the new peach flavor, which will be around until the flavor sells out.
Mike offered the suggestion of adding rum to the smoothies to add a little fun for those hot summer days and sporting events. The smoothies are made with yogurt, a fresh banana, ice, and additional fruits and flavor. The franchise also sells Kona coffee from Hawaii.
Maui Wowi franchises are nearly all mobile Ka’anapali Carts, a flexible mobile unit that brings the product to the people at sporting events, festivals, and parties. But the brand has an eye on expansion: due to the brand’s popularity, the first brick and mortar Maui Wowi location opened in Lowry, Colorado this summer.
Here’s to Fruitful Relationships
Weinberger also made an appearance on the Middle Market Thought Leader podcast. He shared his experience working as a lawyer and feeling unfulfilled on his career path, which led him to franchising, and eventually to Maui Wowi.
On the podcast, we learn that Maui Wowi was started at the Utah State Fair in 1982, and began franchising in 1993. The concept of the Hawaiian theme was designed to bring Hawaii to the mainland, to give customers a flavor of this tropical destination.
The chain operates in hospitals, military bases, sports facilities, and more. Weinberger said the brand’s competition isn’t Jamba Juice or other brick-and-mortar smoothie brands, because the brand is mobile. The brand has 205 franchisees around the world, and they are licensed for three or 10 carts at once.
The host, Jack Sweeney, compared Maui Wowi’s mobile carts to food trucks, and Weinberg agreed that the food truck trend was spurred from what Maui Wowi has been doing for years.
Weinberg says that as people become more conscious of what they put into their bodies, Maui Wowi has been able to meet the demand for higher quality, healthy foods.
