We blog a lot about the food franchise industry here on the Franchise Direct blog, and with good reason. Food franchises are what most Americans think of when they think of when they think about franchising. For watchers of the industry, yesterday was one of the most exciting days of the year, as Technomic leaked its stats from its 2012 report on the top 5 burger franchises in America. There were some eye-opening findings.
For the first time since it started trading, Wendy's is now America's second-favorite burger franchise. They've dethroned the king - Burger King - to reach this pinnacle. Of course, McDonald's remains the country's (and the planets) leading burger franchise, and will take some deposing, but it's fascinating to see a new franchise take the helm as America's number two burger franchise.
As USA Today reports:
"The figures are based on Technomic's estimates of system-wide sales at franchise and company-owned restaurants, rather than corporate revenue, which includes fees from franchise operators. Worldwide, Burger King still has far more restaurants than Wendy's and remains the second biggest hamburger chain behind McDonald's."
In terms of chains, the reports says that "Subway now is No. 2 with $11.4 billion in sales last year and Starbucks is No. 3 with $9.8 billion". McDonald's reign at the top continues. We'll post findings of the report as they come online and continue to examine the latest trends in the QSR sector.
