“To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth.” ~ Pearl S. Buck, Novelist
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ~ Confucius, Philosopher
“To find out what one is fitted to do, and to secure an opportunity to do it, is the key to happiness.” ~ John Dewey, Philosopher
Above is a sampling of thoughts from a few respected public figures on how enjoying what a person does as work impacts that person’s life in general. According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a poll conducted regularly by Gallup, a large majority of American workers are satisfied with their jobs.
However, fewer American workers are satisfied with their jobs today than in past years. The study found 87.5 percent of American workers were content with their jobs as of the end of May 2011 down from the peak of 89.4 percent recorded in February 2008. Dissatisfaction on the job can lead to impacts such as mental health problems like stress and burnout, an increased risk of negative physical ailments such as cardiovascular disease, or even strain on personal relationships. While finding enjoyment on the job remains an elusive goal for some, for the lucky ones who find it, it can lead to an overall better quality of life.
Career advisors, counselors and the like commonly recommend identifying your passions – what interests you – as one of the main steps, if not the first step, in finding a career you love. But after you’ve discovered what you’re passionate about, then what?
Taking the jump into turning your passion into your vocation is a large one, especially if you are already established in a career. After doing research and carefully considering their options, John and Erica Reh are a couple of people that found that franchising offered them a practical avenue of attaining the goal of doing something they love for a living.
At first, John didn’t mind his corporate job, but once “the dissatisfaction was so great that the money wasn’t worth it anymore, it was clearly time to change.” To that point, Erica suggested beginning a business. After thinking through a few ideas, the Dogs Love Running! concept came about, which capitalizes on their “own personal passions for helping animals, being outside, and living a healthy lifestyle.” The franchise allows them to provide an income for themselves while doing “something of real value for [their] human and pet clients.” Now, “it feels good to go to work every day and know that you do something that matters.”
The Rehs originally intended on investing in a pre-existing franchise, but eventually began their own. As John explains, the couple “looked to join an already established franchise when we were researching this idea and industry. But, since no one did what we wanted to do, we just started our own local company. After the success we had, and hearing from other people around the country who inquired about what we were doing, we decided to become a franchisor to help other people do what we had done.”
However, just because they’ve found work within an area that they have a great interest and passion for doesn’t mean they’re expending any less effort to be successful. Every job has ups and downs along with things you’ll like and dislike. As John notes for prospective franchisees, “there’s plenty of ‘un-fun’ things to go along with all the stuff you’re probably excited about. Understand the franchise inside and out before you commit to it. And, if the business doesn’t suit you financially, don’t do it just because it sounds like a ‘fun’ job.”
You don’t have to create a new franchise concept like the Rehs to go after job satisfaction with a franchise. “Joining a franchise can be a great way to save time, money, and effort over reinventing the wheel yourself,” says John. “Know what you’re getting, what you’re committing to, and why you’re doing it. If you know the answers to those three questions, joining a franchise can be a way better way to go than starting your own business. If you love what you do, you’re more likely to be a success.”
So what do you love? Pursue your passion through one of the franchises below or any of the many franchises we have listed on our site.
