The market for fitness and weight loss businesses is only growing larger as Americans themselves get bigger.
1. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that the obesity rate continues to increase.
2. The number of overweight people in the U.S. is currently 100+ million American adults or more than 55 percent of the population. At any given time, tens of millions of Americans trying to lose weight and get fit.
3. Most of the franchises that cater to this market are either fitness facilities, often with a special niche, or diet centers that provide nutritional counseling along with meals and other products. There is also some cross-over between the two –some fitness centers offer nutritional counseling, food products and supplements.
4. In the last two decades, health club membership has grown by 231 percent.
5. According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, there are 2900+ health clubs in the US with 40+ million members.
6. Total revenues for this industry are estimated at $17.6 billion
7. Of the total number of health clubs, commercial fitness centers have about 50 percent of the market. Non-profits, such as the YMCA or university facilities account for about 38 percent. The other 11 percent of members belong to corporate clubs, aerobics studios, resort/spas, hotel and country clubs.
8. Women make up 60 percent of the commercial club membership, so it is not surprising that several fitness franchises cater exclusively to women. Fitness centers report that the most popular, in-demand programs offered at fitness facilities are personal training, step/bench aerobics, cardio kickboxing, yoga, strength training, aerobics classes, group cycling and child care. The biggest profit centers for these businesses are personal training, massage therapy, pro shop, aquatics, tennis, and food and beverage sales.
9. The diet industry is estimated to be at $33 billion a year, with revenues coming from the sale of foods, supplements, weight reduction products, counseling and other services.
