Windshield repair businesses encourage motorists to take better care of their vehicles during the national awareness month

There are several steps drivers can take to preserve their windshields, and ways to determine if replacement is necessary.

In recognition of National Car Care Month, Beveridge suggests a few windshield maintenance tips for consumers to keep in mind:
* If you hear something hit your windshield, even if you do not see obvious damage, you should look it over very carefully. Pay special attention to the black trim bands around the edges of the windshield and to the areas under the wiper blades. Often a small crack will go undetected and if left un-repaired, will grow and make replacement necessary.
* Keep your vehicle cool and avoid sudden temperature changes. Parking a car in the hot sun even during the winter may cause your windshield damage to crack out due to the different heat variables between the windshield and the metal in the car body. The glass and the metal in the car body both expand and contract at different rates. This can cause stress on the windshield which may cause even a small unrepaired damage to crack to release stress. A similar thing can happen if you clean your windshield with cold wiper fluid or cold water in the hot summer months or hot water or warm wiper fluid in the cold winter months. The sudden temperature change can cause uneven stress in the glass that can lead to an unrepaired damage to crack out.
* Look over the windshield for sand blasting damage. Small rocks are hitting your windshield all the time as you drive, and over time and with escalating miles, a windshield will accumulate a lot of these small sand pits. Eventually it will become difficult to see out of the windshield, especially when driving into the sun in the early morning or evening. At this point you should replace your windshield, just as you would replace your tires once the tread wears beyond a certain point.
