Bloomington Play N Trade Supports Local Community Through “Games for Grades” Promotion, “Active Video Game” Tournaments and More
Building strong ties with the community is very important to Play N Trade video game store owners Neil and Tanya Hagre, and they have launched programs that local citizens are excited about and appreciate.
November 15, 2007
“The ‘Games for Grades’ initiative is very unique and one-of-a-kind in the video game industry,” said Neil. “This program demonstrates our genuine commitment to promoting responsible game playing and supporting local students and schools.”
Under the “Games for Grades” promotion, students receive a 10 percent discount on any used video game for each “A” on their report card, and their school receives a 10 percent donation of the retail price.
“We enjoy the opportunity to work with local schools in recognizing students who set a good example, as well as to make donations that will assist their school in continuing to provide high quality educational programs,” Neil said.
Another innovation that Play N Trade has launched is in-store video game tournaments, which have attracted players of all ages, ranging from 28 to 84 participants. In addition to great prizes and the chance to show off their skills, the tournaments have also provided a social networking venue for local gamers.
“I’ve had parents mention that their child is not into sports or activities at school,” Tanya said, “but have been active participants and interacted with others in a competitive, but always fun, situation at our tournaments.”
Friends and family come to cheer and support their favorite player, and have as much fun watching the tournament as the participants have playing. Local gamers have the chance to meet others with similar interests face-to-face, make new friends and swap game-playing tips.
“We’ve had kids exchanging phone numbers and ‘gamertags’ so they can keep in touch with the all of their new friends. We’ve also had people travel from all different areas of the state, and from as far away as Duluth, to participate in our tournaments,” Tanya said.
Since opening on June 28th, Play N Trade has hosted Super Smash Bros., Guitar Hero II, Madden, Halo 2, Gears of War and Halo 3 tournaments.
“Video games are no longer the bane of childhood obesity,” Tanya said. “The Wii console games, as well as Dance, Dance Revolution, are a new genre of active video games that require the players to get up from the couch and move, and even break a sweat, which is a good thing for people of all ages, and are especially fun for families to play together.”
Increasing parental awareness of the benefits of video games is a cornerstone of the Play N Trade philosophy. The “try any game before you buy” policy is targeted not just at gamers looking to check out the latest titles, but also at parents who want to be sure the games they are buying for their children are appropriate.
“Owning our own video game store is realizing a dream for us,” Tanya said, “and we want to share our dream by making Play N Trade a valued member of the community.”
