As the founder and CEO, what inspired you to create American Business Systems?

Well, my wife, Linda, actually started doing medical billing for friend back in 1987. She started making more money than I was making as a computer consultant and it dawned on me that she had developed a business that could be duplicated by other people…if they had the right training and support. So, I got involved and developed the training workshop, created and tested the marketing materials and methods, and we licensed our first licensee in 1994.

What do you attribute ABS’s longevity to?

We have licensees that have built very successful businesses from housewives that have not worked outside the home, single moms that have to start this part-time, retired or recently downsized individuals, people from every educational and ethnic background. How long does the process typically take for an ABS licensee to get their business up and running?

We have people leaving our week-long training workshop here is Dallas and sign up their first client in the first week. More typically, a person will get their first client, following our proven marketing methods, in the first 30 to 90 days. We have had licensees see a return on their investment in the first six months, but generally people see cash-flow within the first 60 days or so; it all depends on whether they have full-time to devote to building their business or if they are building it in their spare time.

Describe the role technology plays at ABS.

Having the best technology is vital in this business. It directly affects not only your bottom line, but more importantly, the revenue of the doctors you’ll be serving. Cloud based is the way to go, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Don’t get stuck with software that requires a CD to be installed on a hard drive! When is the last time you’ve done that? Windows 95?

What’s the biggest mistake you see from incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?

The biggest mistake would probably be to try things outside of our proven steps to market the business. We know what marketing methods work because we test them over and over. Trying something that may have worked in another industry may not work with doctors!

What’s next for American Business Systems in terms of future growth?

ABS makes money from our technology partners when licensees sign up new clients, so we have a vested interest in supporting them on the backend. We measure growth not by the number of new licensees we train, but by the number of medical providers our current licensees sign up. Collectively, our licensees signed up an average of 2 doctors per workday last year! We predict record numbers of new medical practices signed up by our licensees this year and into the foreseeable future.
