Interview with Mike Reeder: Vice President, Brand Leader

Homeowners want an outdoor environment that is both functional and innovative. Archadeck has built a name on deck and porch building, but these days the established outdoor brand goes far beyond simply designing and installing structures. Offering multiple areas to profit is just one way that Archadeck has continued to grow its geographical footprint and client base.

In this Success Stories Interview, we hear from Mike Reeder, the new Vice President and Brand Leader of Archadeck. As a former franchisee, Mike knows exactly what it takes to shape and grow a brand that has a proven track record for excellence. Read on to gain insight into how Archadeck continues to back up their promises to franchisees and has maintained their core values through it all.

Tell us about your history with Archadeck.

Purchased my territory in July of 2001. My previous career was in the Hotel & Restaurant Business, specifically with Hyatt Hotels. I wanted to find a business where my service and production management background could prosper. Construction was not foreign to me and during the investigatory phase, I was intrigued due to the overall lack of those skills in the overall industry. Fortunately, I was correct.

Over the course of 15+ years, we have succeeded in building a strong business intensely focused on integrity, service and high quality to our customers. More importantly, we have seen how successful building a brand dedicated to those principles in our market has dramatically impacted our success.

I just recently accepted the position as Vice President and Brand Leader for Archadeck Outdoor Living and am looking forward to continue my career with the company.

How has being a franchisee shaped the way you lead the brand?

Simply stated, my experience as a franchisee will only give more credence to the support aspects of my new job as leader of the brand. I am excited to bring that experience to all the franchisees.

Describe a person who would fit in well with running an Archadeck franchise, is outdoor building experience necessary?

Business experience is more important than construction knowledge. Having some construction basics is helpful, but not totally necessary. In my opinion, the ideal candidate would have a background in operations management, sales, and a degree of business “sense”. Lastly, they absolutely should have the desire and “fire in the belly” to tackle the opportunities that come from owning any business.

Tell us about what makes Archadeck a proven franchise brand.

Number one to me is the people within the franchisor organization that support the franchisees. Outdoor Living Brands retains excellent management and support staff. In addition, the systems and processes for every single facet of the business model that are available.
In my personal opinion, the most successful businesses are those that “live” the motto…..sales communicates efficiently with operations and production. Anyone can sell something, but success in executing and delivering an excellent final product is what outstanding companies do….over and over again.

What is your #1 piece of advice you would share to a first-time franchisee?

Simply stated, if you follow the system provided by Archadeck…..you will be successful. If you don’t follow the system, you will not be as successful.

Why is home improvement /outdoor living a good industry for a prospective franchisee?

So many reasons, but to list a few:

  1. We are included in the residential remodeling industry. This niche typically does not experience the degrees of peaks and valleys due to economic conditions like other contracting businesses.
  2. Cash flow is a plus. Typically draws are retained from homeowners based on specified time frames for collection created on job progress. In essence, accounts receivables are typically very low
  3. The marketplace for outdoor projects continues to grow, especially in the backyard, home entertainment area. People love to improve their homes and especially, in what they enjoy. This is unlike having to replace a refrigerator or roofing.
  4. We provide an array of surfaces such as wood decking, concrete paver patios and synthetic decking.
  5. Synthetic decking alone and other low maintenance items are what homeowners want to spend their dollars on.

What has been the biggest challenge Archadeck has faced? How did you overcome it?

Learning how to take the business to the “next” level. Starting a business and running all facets to get your feet on the ground is hard enough, but having a vision to build the business is difficult without additional people and processes in place to ensure consistency in your end product.

I overcame it with the generous support from the franchisor, perseverance and believing in myself that I could do it.

What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?

The continued technological advances in synthetic materials in the marketplace. In addition, the niche that we have created that we can build almost anything outside. To elaborate, we used to be just a deck and porch builder. Nowadays we design and install not only “structures”, but we include hardscapes and softscapes. Many of our projects involve more than a deck or patio alone. We found that customers wish to consider a deck and a patio, or a Screen Porch with landscaping. This has also allowed us to secure more projects as homeowners would prefer to work with 1 company and not 2 or 3 for the larger projects.

What’s the biggest mistake you see from incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?

Simply stated, when they don’t follow the system provided by Archadeck. Secondly, they need to reach out to the management and staff at the Outdoor Living Brands. We can assist on any facet or problem that may arise.

Can you elaborate on the kind of support and training an incoming franchisee can expect from Archadeck?

All training categories below:
Design, production management, sales, marketing, social media, technology, operations management, hiring, firing, customer service, problem solving, accounting, business management, financial management, etc., etc.

What’s next for Archadeck in terms of future growth?

100 franchises in 5-6 years with 30-40 of those offices with sales in excess of $1,000,000 per year.
