Can you tell us a little about the history of British Swim School and the part you play in the franchise?
My name is Rita Goldberg and I am the founder of British Swim School. I started British Swim School in 1981 when I left the education world and set out to open one of the first private swim schools in England. I developed unique new methods of teaching infant survival skills, which I eventually brought to America. I went on to open four indoor locations, purpose built, I began to expand into two other states, but then discovered the world of franchising. This has helped me make swimming careers available for those who loved Aquatics as well as those who wanted to own a purposeful and meaningful business. Over the years I have grown wise enough to know what I can do best, which is encouraging the growth, promoting my vision and being the face of British Swim School. I employ the very best to do everything else.

What does the training look like for a British Swim School franchise owner?
Intense! We want our franchise owners to know every aspect of our business. We want them to leave the training fully equipped to start, grow and prosper. We are very detail oriented in our training but our follow-up and support is terrific as well.

We choose our demographics very carefully! Our Franchise Owners are awarded a demographic area of their choice in which there is 20-25,000 children under the age of 9, in a medium to high-income bracket, which usually consists of 2-6 pools within at least 2 or more zip codes region.
Tell us about the day-to-day experiences franchisees can expect while running a British Swim School franchise.
A typical day is often not typical! In the beginning our franchise owners spend 100% of their time managing all facets of the business. For the first 12 months, we require all owners to be owner-operator. It takes this amount of time to really understand the business and build the appropriate team. After 12 months, some of the franchise owners can consider becoming semi absentee, having a manager run the teams at each location.
What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?
Mostly, keeping up with the way parents learn about activities for the children. Using all forms of digital and internet marketing, booking online and using our apps. Technology is important in our industry, although we are fortunate that it cannot replace swimming tuition itself!
What are the most important traits British Swim School looks for in prospective franchisees?
Passion, personality, and perseverance! This franchise is a full-time consuming business to own and we want the people who really want to be here. The people who will work hard, yet have fun while they are doing it, are usually the most successful. We also want prospects to have a millionaire mind-set, as we know that those are the best people to grow any business.
How long does the startup process typically take?
From signing the contract to opening the first school can take as little as three months. Obviously there is no certainty, but once their first pool contract is signed then it should be relatively quick to launch.
What’s the biggest mistake you see from your incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?
There are two main mistakes that our franchise owners may make. Number one is misjudging the amount of money needed to launch, especially in the marketing budget. The second is that while this is definitely a fun business, it absolutely requires full time attention and work, especially in the initial early stages.
What’s next for British Swim School in terms of expansion?
I had never expected to grow to the level that we have grown to in this last three years with 50+ franchise owners who teach water accident survival skills and swim lessons in 110+ pools across 15 states! We are thrilled and excited as we look forward to our continued growth across the nation.
