Can you tell us a little about the history of Gotcha Covered and the part you play in the franchise?
The roots of Gotcha Covered go back to the late 1990's, but the current company is a result of a merger between two industry powerhouses in 2009.
I run the franchisor operations as the President of Gotcha Covered.
Tell us about what makes Gotcha Covered a proven franchise brand.
We have over 70 franchisees in the US and Canada and have countless satisfied customers across both countries. We occupy a unique space in our industry and, whereas most of our industry focuses on commodity products with a transactional approach, Gotcha Covered focuses on providing custom solutions with a consultative approach with our clients.
How would you describe the home improvement industry right now?
Our industry varies by region, and the demand for our products and services ranges from strong to very strong. In some areas, most of our business comes from new home construction; in other areas, most of our business comes from remodeling.
What are the benefits to choosing Gotcha Covered over another home service franchise?
There are many benefits to Gotcha Covered, perhaps too many to list here. But, among the top reasons is that our approach to the market is very different from most of our competition. From marketing to sales, it is relatively easy for us to differentiate ourselves from our competition. And since the vast majority of our competition are independent businesses without the training, support, buying power, branding, or technology that we bring to the table, we can dominate the markets that we serve.
What are the most important traits Gotcha Covered looks for in prospective franchisees?
We prefer franchisees without any industry experience, and our franchisees come from all walks of life. Other than a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism, our franchisees should be outgoing and enjoy building relationships with their customers and business partners.
Can you tell us a little bit about the day-to-day activities of a Gotcha Covered franchisee?
Gotcha Covered is a community-centric business, so the majority of our franchisees' time should be spent with customers and networking partners. A minority of the time will be spent on administrative duties, such as creating proposals, managing projects and other back office activities.
How long does it take for a franchisee to typically get their business up and running?
Because ours is a very simple business model (no storefront, employees, accounts receivable, inventory, etc.), our franchisees can get up and running very quickly. We have had many franchisees that have set appointments before they even come to training, and make sales within the first few weeks after completing training.
Tell us about the support that Gotcha Covered provides to franchisees.
Our support begins with training new franchisees, and we take a customized approach based on each franchisee's unique situation – their background and skill set, personality, budget, territory – and build upon that foundation. Our training curriculum includes extensive product, marketing, sales and business management instruction. After our two-week training class is complete, we help our franchisees get up and running as soon as possible through direct coaching with Corporate staff, webinars, specialized training from our vendor partners, and more. We understand that our success is dependent on the success of our franchisees, which is why we believe that while they are in business for themselves, they are never in business by themselves.
What advice would you give first time franchisees?
Entering into a franchise agreement is a major life commitment, and should be taken very seriously. Do your homework and listen to what current franchisees say about the franchisor. Trust your head and your gut. If it all sounds good, jump in with both feet!
What's next for Gotcha Covered in terms of expansion?
Our next milestone is to get to 100 franchisees, and we hope to achieve that in the next 18-24 months. Beyond that, we aspire to grow to several hundred franchisees across the US and Canada, and ultimately become a household name in our industry.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
When you consider any franchise system, it's appropriate to look at the standard benefits of franchising – training, support, branding, cost of goods, and so on. Gotcha Covered is strong in all of those areas, but I think we have a major asset that is not as obvious, and that is the culture of our franchise base.
