Kenny Moore began Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries with $500 and a single small-town North Carolina location in 1991. Through hard work and a passion for leadership and bonding neighbors together over great food and service, he grew the Hwy 55 concept to its present state of over 120 locations and over 1,000 scheduled to be developed over the next decade. The retro-themed diner allows guests to sit by an open-air grill and watch their food cooked to perfection while listening to the sounds of Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry.

Can you tell us a little about the part you play in the franchise?
As VP of Franchise Sales, I guide you through the process of successfully franchising with Hwy 55. I've been there before - 22 years ago I began as a franchisee with Hwy 55, and currently co-own a North Carolina location.
In your opinion, what makes Hwy 55 such a successful franchise?
The values. We believe passionately in putting others' needs first. At the home office, that means we think about how every decision will first benefit our guests and our franchisees, rather than provide us with a short-term gain.
We also make a mean fresh-never-frozen burger!
What is Hwy 55 doing to stay ahead of the competition?
We're constantly looking to innovate without compromising our core principles. A good example of this is our loyalty program, which uses cutting-edge technology to create a deeper, more enriching relationship with our guests. So far, over 150,000 people have signed up.
How would you describe the burger franchise market right now?
It's a competitive field that rewards passion and hard work. We are in the better burger segment - a segment that has grown considerably over the past few years as customers have begun to seek out fresh ingredients and freshly-prepared food.
We've been operating in this segment for 25 years, and we're happy to say we're growing alongside it.
What are the most important traits Hwy 55 looks for in prospective franchisees?
We look for people with a passion for hospitality and service. We can teach you to cook a burger, run an efficient restaurant, and manage your back-of-the-house. And we can motivate you to be on fire for Hwy 55's mission. But you have to provide that first spark.
How long does the start-up process typically take?
From the time the franchise agreement is signed and a location is identified, most franchisees are opening the doors in the 90 to 120 day range. It greatly depends on the municipality and what is required from their oversight departments. Smaller communities are generally the quickest turnarounds.
What exactly can a franchisee expect from Hwy 55 in terms of training and support?
We'll be with you every step of the way. After coming on board, you will be in the hands of a team experienced in real estate selection, operating systems, and marketing. We've placed a tremendous amount of thought into our training program, which includes a two-week school for owners, operators, and assistant operators. We also provide on-the-ground assistance for the pre- and post-opening day period.

What's the biggest mistake you see from your incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?
If there are missteps, they're made by people who try to reinvent the wheel. We've been fine-tuning the Hwy 55 concept for 25 years, and along the way have made plenty of mistakes. You have the benefit of avoiding those mistakes by following the game plan and staying connected.
What advice would you give first time franchisees?
Buy into the Hwy 55 culture, because we feel it's unique and enriches all aspects of your life - not just your business career. Be open to learning the ins-and-outs of the concept, and give feedback! We look at Hwy 55 as a team effort.
What's next for Hwy 55 in terms of expansion?
We are currently looking for single and multi-store franchisees in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Kentucky.
