In this Success Story Interview, we hear from Maaco President Jason Ryan. Jason has been with Maaco since 2003 and through his path, he has had the opportunity to directly work with franchisees to confidently start, build and grow thriving businesses. Tell us about your role and history with Maaco.
I started with Maaco in 2003 as a Regional Director of Operations. Over the last 13 years, I’ve held various operations roles, eventually serving as Chief Operations Officer for three years before being named President in November 2015. I’ve had a rewarding career with Maaco, with the pleasure of building long-lasting relationships with many franchisees who have I’ve watch start and build successful businesses.
Why is the automotive cosmetic market a good industry for a prospective franchisee?
This is a recession-resistant industry. People will always own vehicles, and recent data shows that people are keeping their vehicles longer and driving more miles than ever before. The car and light truck automotive aftermarket saw an increase of more than $9 billion over the last few years and that space includes auto paint and collision repair services like those provided by Maaco. Whether it’s out of necessity due to an accident or pure desire for a nice-looking car, people will always seek our services. As far as corporate and fleet business – a space Maaco has grown and excelled in – airports, rental car agencies, delivery services and others, require appealing, functioning vehicles to successfully operate their companies.
How long does the start-up process typically take?
Once a license is purchased, franchisees walk hand-in-hand with our team on everything from site selection to marketing, operations and sales training. The process can take as little as four to six months.
What is your #1 piece of advice you would share to a first-time franchisee?
My advice is to align yourself with a team that not just promises success, but delivers with the tools, training and guidance to make that happen. What has been the biggest challenge Maaco has faced? How did you overcome it?
One of our biggest challenges has been changing the perception that we only perform paint services. We are a full-service body shop, meaning we repair all types of collision damage. To overcome this, we made sure that all consumer-facing outreach clearly laid out our services and abilities: advertising, website, in-shop merchandise, and everything in between. We also took the time to make sure everyone in our system had a firm understanding of what the brand offers, and that they were set up for success in completing the services. We started the “Maaco Certified” program, a rigorous certification process that teaches and tests on best practices and abilities in auto paint and collision repair across our system.
What advantages does the Maaco business model offer?
Maaco is an established brand with a national presence. Our model for success is not complex or difficult to follow which is why we have franchisees from all walks of life. We are always looking for ways to share and implement new techniques for faster and better service on a shop-by-shop level.
