Not only are pests like ticks and mosquitoes a nuisance, they can also be dangerous. It’s safe to say, Mosquito Squad is always a welcome sight in communities.
In this Success Stories Interview, we get the inside scoop from Mosquito Squad founder and original franchise owner, Boyd Huneycutt. Boyd recognized the need within communities for safe, effective pest control and created the Mosquito Squad business model, paving the way for steady growth. Tell us what your path has looked like as an original founder of Mosquito Squad and your role now.
While being co founder of the franchise corporation I also owned the first franchise location. I was able to test and help build the different systems for the franchise corporation that could be duplicated for each new franchise. In 2009 we sold the franchise corporation to Outdoor Living Brands. I came on board as the brand leader at that point. We have grown from about 17 locations to 180 locations after selling to Outdoor Living Brands. I am now more of a business coach to the franchisees at this point of my career.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being with Mosquito Squad?
I would say seeing franchisees becoming successful business owners helping them to achieve the lifestyle and goals they are looking for.
Describe a person who would fit in well with running a Mosquito Squad franchise
Someone with a Sales and Marketing background would be ideal, but that isn’t a necessary requirement as we have a full-service support team with Mosquito Squad. People who can train and coach these skills.
Is pest control experience necessary?
No, most of our franchisees come to us with no pest control experience – they have business experience and the desire to become entrepreneurs. We train the rest.
Has the landscape of outdoor pest control changed since the inception of Mosquito Squad?
Yes, we were the pioneers in the business and the face of Mosquito Squad has evolved from the foundation of installed misting systems to the barrier spray services we provide today. We have expanded to include the commercial opportunities, special events services, and even customized treatment plans.
What makes a Mosquito Squad franchise a great value?
Mosquito Squad is a relatively simple business model – which we have worked very hard to make that happen – now, the Franchisees can utilize this opportunity to achieve many of the personal goals that drive them to get into a business – lifestyle changes (taking control of their future and destiny), wealth, equity, income, and debt reduction are the primary drivers.
What is your #1 piece of advice you would share to a first-time franchisee?
Just follow the systems! A successful franchise will have systems for everything they do. These systems are tried and true – it is why you invest in a franchise – shorten or eliminate the learning curve.
What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?
As consumers learn more about the need to protect their families against the diseases spread by mosquitoes (recently we have heard about Zika, chikungunya, dengue fever, etc.) the more this segment will grow. As others companies enter the segment, make sure you are working with a reputable company.
What makes Mosquito Squad different from other pest control franchises?
Again, we founded the category, and Mosquitoes is what we do. We are setting the bar in the outdoor pest control category.
What is the biggest mistake you see from incoming franchisees and how can it be avoided?
Mosquito Squad works diligently to bring the right people into the business, but as we know, the leading cause of business failure is undercapitalization – which means marketing suffers. You have to be properly capitalized to be successful, and understand you must work “ON” your business, not just in it.
Can you elaborate on the kind of support and training an incoming franchisee can expect from Mosquito Squad?
New franchisees attend a 5-day comprehensive training in Richmond, VA where the topics covered include Outbound & Inbound Marketing, Sales, Technology Systems, Accounting & Finance, Barrier Spray & Misting System field training, HR, Client Service, Safety, & the Mosquito and Tick. After training, franchisees partner with a dedicated support person who will conduct a Marketing Plan Review, Sales training/practice calls, and Operational Support calls. In addition, new franchisees are exposed to training webinars and group conference calls on specific marketing tactics, sales techniques, operational efficiencies and tips and other topics relative to ramping up a Mosquito Squad franchise. Franchisee support teams include the Operational Support team, Marketing Support team, IT support team, Finance support team and the Graphic Design support team.
What’s next for Mosquito Squad in terms of future growth?
We are putting a lot of emphasis on International growth this year and years to come. There are still another 150 plus territories available in the US but International growth will be a large part of our future.
