Interview with Mike Harris, Pet Passages Founder and President
Pet Passages believes that pet family members deserve not only the very best in life but also in death. Pet Passages fills a need in an underserved market - there is plenty of care for deceased human family members, but very little for pet family members. Pet Passages found instant success in their first pet funeral home and crematory and aims to raise the bar for the pet loss profession across the country.
Pet Passages founder and president Mike Harris was moved by the loss of his beloved dogs to create a pet funeral home business. In this Success Story Interview, Mike tells us about the unique opportunity a Pet Passages franchise offers and what franchisees can expect from the business.
Can you tell us a little about the history of Pet Passages and the part you play in the franchise?
Pet Passages began with the personal and intimate loss of my dogs Hannah and Luke (pictured below). As the founder and owner of Pet Passages, I am also a third generation funeral director and a loving pet parent. It is with the knowledge, education and training of a licensed funeral director together with my personal experiences at the love and loss of my own pets that I created a pet funeral home and cremation business to meet the needs of a vastly underserved market. I am extremely passionate about Pet Passages and and I am intimately involved in every aspect of a new franchisee's start up.
What demographics is a Pet Passages business best suited for?
Any demographic works for a Pet Passages simply because people love their pets and not only want the best for them in life, they also want the best for them in death. The demand for transparent quality pet loss services is rapidly increasing as people no longer want the status quo disposal service that many veterinary hospitals offer.
What can you tell us about the day-to-day experiences of those running a Pet Passage business?
There is no one day that will ever be the same because each pet’s service is as unique as their personality. The reward and personal gratification while working with people at an intimate time is unlike any other experience you may have encountered before. At the end of each day you will know in your heart that you have truly made a difference in people’s lives.
What does the training look like for a Pet Passage franchisee?
A franchisee can expect to spend 2 full weeks at Pet Passages Academy for actual hands on training. They will learn every aspect of owning and operating a successful pet funeral home and crematory and I will personally be one of those trainers. I will also walk hand in hand with you during the opening week of their new business.
What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?
The pet industry in 2016 is forecasted to be worth an estimated 60 billion dollars and is currently one of the fastest growing sectors in our economy today. As a pet’s status in a families household continues to sky rocket to that equivalent of a family member expect pet funeral and cremations services to sky rocket as well. With very little or no competition in many areas Pet Passages has filled a niche that is in high demand.
How competitive is the industry? How does Pet Passages set itself apart from the competition?
Coming from our perspective the industry has little competition. Pet cremation services have existed for some time, but nothing like what Pet Passages brings to market. We have set ourselves apart from the competition in every aspect from Pet Identification, Tracking and Chain of Custody Procedures, Service Levels, Technology, Products to Training. Therefore, the market is wide open for this type of service.
How long does the start-up process typically take?
Once a license is purchased, franchisees walk hand-in-hand with our team on everything from build out to marketing, operations and sales training. The process can take as little as four to five months.
What’s next for Pet Passages in terms of expansion?
Pet Passages is an established brand with a national presence and proven track record. We are the leading experts in this field and currently the largest provider of pet loss services in North America. We look to continue our growth until we have a Pet Passages provider in every market.
