Interview with Lyle Myers: President of RedLine Athletics Franchising

Lyle Myers RedLine AthleticsFollowing his success as the founder of Massage Envy, John Leonesio began RedLine Athletics Franchising in 2012 to bring safe and effective athletic training to young athletes all across the country. RedLine Athletics "Youth" Athletic Training Centers are focused on enhancing speed, power and core strength along with injury prevention of student athletes ages eight to eighteen. With 230 franchise licenses sold, RedLine Athletics is poised to change the nature of youth athletic centers.

In this Success Story Interview, we hear from the President of RedLine Athletics Franchising, Lyle Myers. He tells us a little bit about why RedLine Athletics is an exciting franchise opportunity, their partnership with Fusionetics, and more!

Can you tell us a little about the history of RedLine Athletics and the part you play in the franchise?

RedLine Athletics was founded in 2006 by a former professional baseball player that wanted to give young athletes the opportunity to get the same athletic training that he received. In 2012, Founder of Massage Envy and serial entrepreneur, John Leonesio had 2 young children training at that first RedLine Athletics Training Center in San Juan Capistrano, CA. John's young athletes were figure skaters, and he was very impressed by how much better their performance was on the ice during their competitions. He also noticed that since they had begun to train at RedLine, they weren't getting injured during practice and performances. John began a conversation with the owner, and in the summer of 2013 John formed RedLine Athletics Franchising LLC. As president of the company since January 2015, my primary goal is to build revenue driving programs, processes and procedures for the success of our Franchise Partners. In addition, I create strategic partnerships with companies to enhance the productivity and outcome inside the Training Centers.

The training and curriculum that the Support Center provides our franchise partners is cutting edge. We are here to assist our franchisees with anything they need. From assisting with finding the right location in their area, negotiating for a strong lease, to marketing collateral, programs, technology, etc. We are always brainstorming new ways to improve the overall brand and what we deliver to each training center.

How competitive is the industry, and how does RedLine Athletics set itself apart?

The youth athletic industry is a $5 billion business. Approximately 35 million children participate in youth sports every year. At RedLine, we set ourselves apart with our unique RedLine culture. We have a passion to train our members, to not only make them better athletes, but more importantly, we have a purpose to make them better adults. Unique to RedLine, our training begins at the top of every hour, so there is no scheduling, and no missed work-outs, just make sure your athlete is at the training center at the top of any hour for their full 90-minute workout. We also have a training curriculum like no other youth athletic training center. We focus on making each of our members all-around better athletes first, and then we focus on their sport-specific skills. Additionally, at RedLine injury prevention is crucial, and through our partnership with Fusionetics we are able to bring injury prevention techniques that focus on "pre-hab vs. re-hab". With these customized techniques we help keep our members on the field and in the game!

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced and how have you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge was Brand Recognition. By allocating additional advertising dollars to print and local/national media, we were able to overcome this challenge. We are now all across the nation and have 230 franchise licenses sold! This means, if we stopped selling today, in the next 5-7 years there will be 230 RedLine Training Centers open across the country, making us the #1 youth athletic training center franchise in the USA.

What are the most important traits RedLine Athletics looks for in prospective franchisees?

When looking for new franchise partners we look for someone who most importantly, has the same vision we do, which is helping our members not only become better athletes, but better adults. We look for people who are willing to go out and do the work to build their membership base by getting into their communities and building relationships at the local level. At RedLine we always say "if you don't go out they won't come in"; being able to build relationships with our members, as well as their parents, and coaches, makes for a long-lasting partnership.

How long does the start-up process typically take?

The Startup process can take anywhere from about 2-6 months depending upon each site selection, build out, equipment and flooring processes. We give each of our franchise partners all of the support necessary to make this process as smooth and quick as possible.

Tell us about the support that RedLine Athletics provides to franchisees.

At the franchise support center we have worked hard to provide each of our franchise partners all of the necessary programs, processes and procedures to help them succeed. We provide them with everything from our construction spec book, a "Guide to Open", equipment and flooring packages, real estate brokers, Grand Opening Guide, just to get them started. We also build a "Local Marketing Guide" for their protected territory, free of charge. We have a full suite of technology and all sport training curriculum and POS business systems including marketing, and sales processes. Our Franchise support center is always available and welcomes new ideas and best practices.

What's the biggest mistake you see from your incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?

One of the things that we focus on with our new franchisees is implementing not only our culture, but also our Programs, Processes, and Procedures. John Leonesio brings 40+ years of franchise experience to RedLine, and we want our franchise partners to "imitate before you innovate". The tools that we provide are proven in the industry, and will make them successful. There will be opportunity in their future to innovate and we welcome new ideas, but in the beginning, embracing and adopting our methods will help you avoid costly mistakes.

What's next for RedLine Athletics in terms of expansion?

Again, we currently have 230 licenses sold in 12 states with 10 training centers open. We have 4 more in the process of opening by the end of this year. We project by the end of 2016 to add 3-4 more Regional Developers and another 36-48 licenses to them. This trajectory will allow us to fulfill our company vision; "Develop unparalleled, high quality training centers to become the preeminent Youth Athletic Training Center brand in the USA".
