In this Success Story Interview, Screenmobile co-founder and CEO/President Scott Walker takes us through the history of Screenmobile and lets us know what new franchisees can expect from the home improvement franchise, from training to the everyday activities of running the business. Can you tell us a little about the history of Screenmobile and the part you play in the franchise?
My family and I founded Screenmobile in 1980 in our garage in Glendora, California. We started by converting a tent trailer into the first mobile manufacturing unit for screens. This trailer allowed us to measure, manufacture, and install all of our product offerings on-site at the convenience of the customer. After completing a few jobs, we received incredible feedback regarding the speed and quality of the product and service. We quickly realized the potential of this model and began to scale the business. After 35 years Screenmobile has grown to over 100 franchise owners across the US and we continue to grow as we pioneer the industry.
I have led the Screenmobile Corporation as the CEO and President since 1999. Prior to that, I served as the Vice President and spent 18 years as a Service Technician, Support Manager, and Operations Manager. This enabled me to develop and perfect systems in all areas that I led.

Our program includes both classroom and hands-on training that covers administration, marketing, sales, and the fundamentals of production. Screenmobile is a simple business model and our franchise owners are able to create work-life balance. Most appointments are scheduled between 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Franchise owners are able to work weekends by choice but this is not a requirement. Typical days consist of returning inquiries, scheduling jobs, providing estimates, having fun providing screening products and services to the customers at their own homes or commercial sites. What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?
Screenmobile falls within the service sector of the $20 Billion dollar home improvement industry, which continues to grow year after year. In recent years, our franchise owners have begun to take on more commercial jobs. Additionally we have seen a large increase in the popularity of our weatherizing products, retractable screens, our pet and golf ball protection and security applications. Sales have increased since the Zika Virus was introduced to the United States; we are keeping an eye on that as well.
What are the most important traits Screenmobile looks for in prospective franchisees?
The right candidate for Screenmobile is someone who is outgoing, has a fun and friendly personality, loves working outdoors, is able to follow a proven system, and has good communication skills. We don’t require that you have experience as a contractor, we have franchise owners from all walks of life in our family. As long as you are handy, Screenmobile will provide all of the training necessary for you to be able to manufacture all of the products your business offers.
How long does the start-up process typically take?
From the time the franchise agreement is signed, we shake hands and bring the new franchise owner into the family, it takes 8-12 weeks to get the business up and running.
What’s the biggest mistake you see from your incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?
The biggest mistake we see is not taking the time to truly implement our system. With over 35 years of experience in this industry we have tried and true systems. Through the Screenmobile University we make sure that our new franchise owners have everything they need to become successful.
What’s next for Screenmobile in terms of expansion?
In the last year we have tripled our annual growth rate and expect to do the same in the upcoming year. With great validation, high income potential, and a great work/life balance we are extremely excited about bringing more like-minded individuals into the Screenmobile family!
