Can you tell us a little about the history of The Glass Guru and the part you play in the franchise?
The Glass Guru was founded in 2004 by our current CEO Dan Frey. Initially the company was only offering solutions to homeowners who were suffering from failed dual-pane windows, and we have the ability to restore these widows, eliminating the moisture build up inside the window glass. The company quickly evolved to offer more than just dual-pane moisture removal, and we expanded our offering to include all things residential glass, windows, and entry doors. We began franchising in 2007, and The Glass Guru currently has 80+ locations throughout North America.
I am currently the Director of Corporate Development, working mostly on the franchise sales and compliance side of the business. With over 26 years in franchising, I endeavor to leverage my experience in the ongoing development of the organization, as well as being the best resource I can be for franchise prospects looking at our franchise opportunity, helping them discover if The Glass Guru is right for them.

What does the training look like for The Glass Guru franchisees?
The Glass Guru offers a comprehensive training program for new franchise owners. It all starts 4-6 weekend prior to franchise owners conducting their on-site training, with the kickoff of the store opening checklist. Franchise owners begin by walking the path to opening their location(s) by working hand-on-hand with our Operations team to setup their facility (if applicable), connect with vendors, purchase and outfit vehicles, and recruit staff. Franchise owners will also take part in a number of live and recorded webinars to begin to ramp their individual skills up. On-site training is 5 days at our Roseville, CA based headquarters. Graduated learning continues after they leave, with ongoing webinars and conference calls over the Franchisee’s first 90 – 120 days in operation.
How long does the start-up process typically take?
Typically, the process of opening a location with The Glass Guru is about 90 days following securing funding for the startup.
How would you describe the home improvement franchise market right now?
While some markets are slower that others to recover, the home improvement/home services market is huge right now. Markets are beginning to see spending in this sector similar to their pre-2008 highs. Another thing that has worked for The Glass Guru is that we have our feet equally planed in two camps; Home Improvement and Home Repair. While home improvement took a bit hit during the recession, home repair remained constant. Let’s face it… glass repair is a high-priority item, even when things are tight. It’s what allowed us to thrive during the downturn.
What are some trends to keep an eye out for within your industry segment?
Energy efficiency is a big-time buzzword right now. Homeowners are eager to make investments in their home that will give them return-on-investment. Energy efficiency upgrades that pay for themselves down the road through reductions in utility costs are in high demand. There are often local or state programs that help homeowners finance approved energy efficiency upgrades! This includes window and entry door upgrades, where The Glass Guru in in a unique position to assist homeowners.
What are the most important traits The Glass Guru looks for in prospective franchisees?
The Glass Guru is always on the lookout for energetic, outgoing franchise owners who have a keen understanding of Teambuilding, Sales, and Marketing. We are looking for business “drivers” who are not afraid to get out and network the business and, when given the opportunity, ask their customers for their business.
What’s the biggest mistake you see from your incoming franchisees? How can it be avoided?
Moving too fast, spending too much. Our success has been built on a methodology of conservative and prudent growth. Our successful franchise owners used cash-flow to build their businesses over time, rather than throwing a whole bunch of money at it, really fast. Our “walk-before-you-run” methodology is something that’s facilitated by our Operations team. When franchise owners follow the model, there’s a good opportunity for success.
What advice would you give first time franchisees?
First, take the time to complete your due diligence. Make sure you are getting all the tools and resources you can from franchisors when you are searching for the right business. Once you decide on a franchise, leverage the model, leverage the support staff! It’s likely that the startup model is the way it is because it’s been developed over time. In addition to having a really good relationship with the franchisor, make sure to have franchise mentors too. Usually, one can develop very meaningful relationships with 2-3 trusted advisors in the franchise network who’ve worked the model to build successful businesses.
What’s next for The Glass Guru in terms of expansion?
The Glass Guru is just getting started in North America. We have hundreds of viable territories available for purchase throughout North America. We will continue to aggressively seek qualified candidate in the USA and Canada for the next several years. After that, the organization will likely seek to franchise our model in select countries in Europe, Central, and South America.
What do you attribute The Glass Guru’s longevity to?
Simple… great people working a great model. Our franchise concept is based around a series of products and services that will always have a high-demand. We’ve surrounded ourselves with a world-class franchisor team, and over the years have attracted and retained committed and hardworking folks as our franchise owners.
