Sport Clips: Interview with Clete Brewer
Clete Brewer, president of Sports Clips, sat down with Lillie Burroughs of Franchise Direct for a conversation about his unique hair-cutting franchise.
Clete describes a Sports Clips as a “haircut chain specializing in men and boys haircuts in an exciting sports environment.”
Sports Clips has been in business for 15 years, and now has 633 stores across America. Clete says Sports Clips is an essentially ‘fun concept’.
“Our founder and CEO Gordon Logan saw an opportunity in the men and boys haircut market that no one was really serving. There was a lot of unisex salons out there, but no one was really catering to the men and boys haircut market, so he created a wholesome family environment with sports as the theme. But also creating a haircut experience. He opened a couple stores and then two years later started franchising and here we are today.”
Sports Clips is unique, in Clete’s eyes, because of the ‘hair-cutting experience’ that the store offers.
“There’s a system behind the experience. The appeal of sports and being involved in that and networking at a local level and being involved in that with like little league baseball and youth leagues, boys and girls clubs and things along those lines really give us community involvement but they build our brand within our future clients. The client experience is really what separates us from other haircutters,” he says.
Clete also has a very clear idea of what makes a successful Sports Clips franchisee.
“We look for individuals that want to keep their job but want to start another business and have a new way to create an income and usually have a four-to-five year plan with a multi-unit strategy. Most of our franchisees are multi-unit owners, so they’re building three or more stores. They can keep their jobs while they do that, because this is not an owner-operated model it’s more of an owner-investor. Therefore, they’re able to still have lifestyle and income while they’re building a store on the side,” he says.
Best of all you don’t need any prior experience to succeed with Sports Clips.
“You do not need haircutting experience. I would say 95% of our franchisees didn’t have haircutting experience. We’ll teach you and train you how to be good in this industry, but it’s really a manager-operated store,” Clete says.
