About This Video

In this Boulder Designs franchisee video, the Devoult family talks through how Boulder Designs became their next family business — alongside ten cellular stores across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, a furniture business, a floral shop, and a hockey team. The discovery moment came at a January franchise convention in Dallas. Walking the back corner of the show, the Devoults found Boulder Designs at the very last booth — the product caught them, and the fire pit immediately stood out as something they wanted to bring back to their market in Wichita Falls, where they describe themselves as having a near-monopoly on the category. What sets the Devoult model apart is the family operating structure. The kids are part of the business: an oldest daughter as marketing manager and ad manager for the family's cellular business; three boys, including a younger son still finishing high school. The parents describe the kids as artsy, the family as creative, and the personalities as a useful mix — Lofton more serious, Janssen as the comedian, and Roy and the boys as the creative engine. The Boulder Designs product fits naturally into how they already work together, with personalized boulders giving each member of the family a chance to contribute design ideas. Their reaction to Boulder Designs corporate is just as candid. They describe the support team as feeling like family already, the people as down-to-earth, and the training as more hands-on than anything they've previously been through across multiple existing businesses.
