Whenever I tell people I meet what I do for a living, I’m always asked the same thing.
“What’s hot in franchising these days?”
My answer is always this: “I can’t really name a specific franchise business, but there are a couple of franchise sectors you may want to look into.”
In this post, I’m going to tell you about one such sector, and why you need to include it in your franchise opportunity search.

But before I reveal this well-known area of franchising, it’s important for you to know why it’s become more popular than ever.
The Changing Face Of Work
In case you haven’t noticed, more and more of us are working from home.
And if you happen to be someone who has transitioned to a home office, you’ve become aware of some of the pros and cons that come with it.
Those pros may include:
- Working in comfortable attire (sweatpants and pajamas)
- No cubicles
- Less wear and tear on your vehicle
Some of the cons probably include:
- Work-life balance issues
- Less collaboration with co-workers
- Isolation issues
There are more pros and cons of working from home, but you get the gist.
So what has the influx of employees working from home created?
Demand.
And I’m not referring to the increased demand for home office furnishings, laptops, and high-speed internet. I'm talking about pets.
The number of pets being acquired has skyrocketed. And it’s a direct result of more people being at home.

“All over the country, from New York to Wisconsin and North Carolina to Colorado and New Mexico, animal shelters are reporting massive upswings in the numbers of animals they’ve been able to adopt out or place in foster homes. The reason why is no mystery: As people are practicing social distancing to curb the spread of Covid-19, many have come to the conclusion that now is the perfect time to bring a pet into their homes.” - Wired.com

Given these points, there’s going to be an increased demand for pet products and pet services. And if you love pets, this may be the right time to invest in a pet-related franchise business.
But which ones?
Pet Franchise Opportunities
Here are a few examples of pet-related franchise businesses that are worth a look.
Pet Boarding
Franchisees that are involved in this sector of the pet industry provide a place for pets to stay while their owners are at work and/or out of town.
But there’s a new segment of potential customers that are worth a look: The new crop of home-based employees who own pets.
These are the workers who need to attend important virtual meetings and/or give presentations...without interruption.
And as much as we love our pets, they have a tendency to distract us or interrupt us at the most inopportune times.
The solution?
A half a day (or a full day) at doggie day care!
Pet Supplies
Consumers love their pets. And they spend billions of dollars on pet food and other supplies every year.
In addition, some of the larger pet supply retailers and franchises have made smart moves by adding extra services for pet owners, making these stores one-stop shops.
For example, pet owners can get their pets groomed and even schedule check-ups, all in one place.
Dog Training
The growing number of pet adoptions is good news for animal shelters all across the United States. Shelters that used to be at capacity, or worse, over-capacity, are at comfortable levels now. But there’s a catch.
More often than not, dogs adopted from shelters bring unwanted behaviors with them. And for first-time dog owners, these behaviors (especially ones that cause destruction or involve aggression) can become a constant source of stress for both the dog and the family.
The good news is that there are probably several dog training companies in your area. And some of them are franchise businesses owned and operated by local residents.
These franchisees (and their employees) are specially trained to identify and correct negative behaviors, completely transforming dogs into wonderful, well-behaved family members.
To conclude, if you have a love for pets and you’re attracted to the idea of owning a franchise in a growing sector, now may be the time to look into pet franchise opportunities.
