I’m not going to sugarcoat this: We Americans like love sweet food.
- Donuts
- Pastries
- Cupcakes
- Cookies
- Cakes
- Ice Cream
- Frozen Yogurt
- Candy
And more. We love them all.
The good news is that there are many franchise opportunities that offer these food products.
The bad news? Most of these dessert products lean towards less than healthy.
How much does that last point mean? Not much, to be frank.
In my role as a franchise advisor, I’ve met with people who’ve told me “I would never buy a franchise that harms the environment.” I get it. No problem.
But I’ve never talked with a client who voiced their concern about owning and operating a franchise that serves sweets and other rich items.
On the contrary, most of the people I talk to want to know where the action is. Where consumers are spending their money. What the trends are.
These days, several trends are in foods that satisfy America's sweet tooth.

Since I saw the grand opening of the newest Krispy Kreme in Northeast Ohio this week, I figure it’s a good place to start. But they’re not the only franchise specializing in melt-in-your-mouth donuts. Can you think of any others?
In addition to franchises that only serve donuts, there are several franchises that offer donuts as part of their menu you can explore.
Who doesn’t like chocolate?
Today’s consumers energetically consume gobs of chocolate.
According to Grand View Research, the North America chocolate market size was valued at $39.4 billion (about $120 per person in the US) in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of around 4% through 2030.
The good news is that several franchises specializing in chocolate are up and running, and there’s plenty of room for growth.
Cupcakes are in.
Expensive, gourmet cupcakes that is.
Personally, I tend to be a bit tight when it comes to my own dessert spend, but millions of other Americans aren’t.
It’s a proven fact that a sizable number of people will fork over $5+ for a delicious, fresh-baked, and fine-looking cupcake.

They are also easy to make, readily available in multitude of flavor and toppings options and easy to consume. While some consider desserts like ice cream and Italian Ice more on the seasonal side of things, franchise businesses in this space are always popular. Especially with die-hard frozen dessert lovers!
And you don’t need specific market data to know how popular ice cream and its cousins (Italian Ice, frozen Yogurt) are. Every local community has at least one ice cream shop, and probably two.
That said, you may not know this, but franchises in the frozen dessert space make excellent family businesses.
Why? For one, getting multiple family members involved in the business (in a hands-on way) can effectively take the “I can’t find reliable help” issue off the table for most franchisees. That enables franchisees to spend more time on business-building and community relations. The things that can and will grow their business.
