The skill set required to be a success in the military translates well into civilian franchise opportunities. In fact, today, franchises are utilizing military veterans in greater number than ever before. This act of combining those who have military experience with private franchise opportunities has been a great success.
International Franchise Association:
One example of a successful franchise military combination was experienced by the International Franchise Association (IFA). This trade group represents 825,000 franchise establishments including substantial international chains such as 7-Eleven stores and even smaller specialty businesses. In 2011, the franchise set out to employ 80,000 veterans and military spouses either as employees or as business owners through their campaign Operation Enduring Opportunity. Two years later, the goal of hiring 80,000 vets has been surpassed as the IFA has now helped over 150,000 military spouses and veterans become franchise owners.
VetFran:
Another franchise organization that has stepped up to employ vets and help them transition successfully from military life to the civilian world is VetFran. This organization was founded by Don Dwyer Sr. who is the founder of Dwyer Group franchise brands. VetFran was originally established to assist veterans of the first Gulf War but was re-established after 9-11 to serve today's vets. VetFran now works predominately under the International Franchise Association, which is mentioned above.
Today, VetFran boasts over 5,000 franchise systems that offer financial incentives and various means of support for those who have retired from military service or been honorably discharged from the military. The financial incentives offered include a discounted franchise fee or a waive of the franchise fee altogether.
Why is the veteran franchise combination ideal?
The act of building a battle plan or goal during military service is similar to the way a successful franchise is built. For example, each is built upon predetermined plans and works systematically to reach success. Furthermore, the work ethic, leadership skills and discipline it takes to run a successful franchise is similar to the character traits required to have success in military service. Therefore, it is no wonder that the partnership between public franchise and military vets has been so successful.
In addition to the positive aspects listed above, franchises also feel hiring veterans as employees is a way for them to support the economy and social infrastructure while giving back in a small way to those who have sacrificed so much for the country through their years of military service.
