Nevada Public School District Aims to Improve through 'Franchise Principals'

Taking a proven model for success then replicating it amongst other units to nurture a successful network sounds familiar, doesn't it? By duplicating successful strategies and sharing them, one Las Vegas, Nevada based school district is considering how to extend the success of certain high performing public schools to those facing underperformance with principles commonly found in franchising in combination with the more common principals seen in education.

Challenges facing public schools are numerous, from funding issues, cutbacks on certain curriculum, to reallocations that affect the stability that children feel at school. The plan to extend successful strategies to underperforming schools involves utilizing traveling principals in a similar way that franchise representatives are used.

These traveling principals would regularly visit those schools, taking charge of leading them based on what’s been working at respective higher performing schools. Close proximity is thus key so that principals can effectively juggle their traveling time and energy devoted between either school to ensure that both benefit.

So far, two schools in the Clark County School district are taking part in the new plan to help improve their ranks from two stars. If the plan proves successful, the aim is to expand beyond to other schools with the goal of boosting not only the performance of students but also their overall experience at school.

Parental interest in keeping children’s chances of success high is on the rise and more parents are looking beyond public school systems to provide the nurturance and educational advantages they need. Should franchising strategies for student success prove beneficial in the public school district sector under arrangements such as this, no doubt more parents may come to find they can count on local programs to meet the needs of their children.

Nonetheless, the same challenges facing public schools across the country continue to rival even the best efforts of school district leaders to improve education and environment for children. Non-traditional subjects like music, art subjects, and dance are often the first programs to disappear from curriculum despite attempts to prevent their removal.

It is no wonder then that projections for the international private tutoring market are set to exceed $103 billion by 2018—an impressive figure that calls attention to the importance parents place on ensuring a quality education for their children. Additionally, a 5% growth rate per year is expected industry wide for child education and tutoring franchises for the next approximately five years. As the demand increases, the number of franchise businesses in the education sector covering a wide range of both traditional and non-traditional subjects is on the rise so that parents can augment their child’s education when they want, how they want.
