About half of the people I talk to about owning a franchise express a desire to own multiple franchise businesses.
Multi-unit franchising (as it’s called) is very popular. It can be a wonderful way to build a business. But it does require a higher investment than franchise opportunities that only need a single location. The notion of spending more often speaks fear into the heart of newbie franchisees.
But don't fear. Single location franchises can also be extremely successful. Let’s look at five franchises where only owning one location can work out well.
1. Personnel/Staffing
Franchise businesses that offer temporary and permanent staffing solutions can easily be operated out of one nice-sized office.
These high-volume businesses expand by adding clients and employees, with new client acquisition happening out of the office at the prospective client’s place of business. And when new employees are added, they’re only at the franchise office sporadically, as most of their time is spent at their temporary employer’s place of business.
2. Sign Companies
Sign-making businesses can be owned and operated in a retail shopping center or a light industrial park-type complex.
And since they’re basically production facilities, a decent-but not huge amount of commercial size is needed for things like sign-making equipment, storage, and anywhere from 3-10 employees, depending on the size of the business.
Finally, very few customers actually walk-in to a sign business, so there’s no need for a fancy entryway. That’s because sign businesses are B2B, with 90% of the sales taking place outside the business.
3. Full-Service Restaurants
Most of the time, full-service restaurants offer lunch and dinner along with a wide-variety of menu offerings. Some even offer liquor.
That’s why a decent-sized, busy full-service restaurant franchise can bring in exceptional revenue. It’s not uncommon to see annual sales numbers of $1 million or more.
That said, these opportunities tend to be on the higher-end of the investment scale, depending on the franchise. Startup costs range from $500,000-$2,000,000 or more.
4. Entertainment
The past 10 years has seen an influx of franchise opportunities in the entertainment sector. And new concepts are being introduced all the time.
From indoor trampoline/inflatable parks to aquatic centers offering year-round children’s swimming lessons, franchise opportunities in this sector are growing more popular every year.
If you can see yourself owning a business that puts smiles on people’s faces, check out franchise opportunities that are in the business of entertaining.
5. Niche Fitness
Fitness is hot, and it has been for quite a while.
But today’s consumers want more than just a workout. They want an experience. That’s why franchisors have been introducing highly-specialized fitness concepts.
For instance, there are franchise businesses that specialize in sports-specific training for athletes of all ages. For example, if your high school junior is hoping to get a college scholarship for soccer, you can enroll her in a fitness program designed especially for soccer players. Doing so may improve her chances of securing a sports scholarship at the school of her choice.
In contrast, if you’d like to go the more traditional route, franchise ownership opportunities still exist for full-service fitness clubs and gyms with large memberships and the numbers to match.
All in all, if you’re attracted to the idea of owning and operating a single franchise business location, there’s no shortage of good choices.
