2013 IFA Convention Interview: Thomas Wolfe Talks Ziebart & Auto Industry Trends

Thomas shared a number of select points for those interested in franchising and particularly the automotive franchise industry. Working with Ziebart since 1977, Thomas has lived through the various trends and shifts within the U.S. auto industry. Ziebart now operates in 31 countries with 800 plus retail locations, which makes this franchise incredibly diverse in its global appeal.

His prognosis on the years ahead for the U.S. auto industry and Ziebart’s role?

With former 2012 and projected 2013 U.S. automotive industry sales at 14.5 million and 15.3 million respectively, Thomas mentions, “when you look at the automotive industry relating to franchising, even if a franchisor didn’t raise prices, didn’t add new products, he would still be able to get some kind of increased sales because of the increase in the number of cars being sold.” U.S. auto sales are set to increase with large U.S. auto manufacturers experiencing an increase in sales.

Automotive trends are always on the move, and Thomas mentioned the following points in relation to shifts in the industry as well as challenges that auto franchising must overcome:

“What’s happened to the automotive industry is that the average car now on the road is ten years. People are keeping their cars longer and all of our products or the majority of our products we warranty for the ten years, so that we see a very positive outlook in the franchising automobile business.”

“The auto industry changes every year and we have to offer products and services to meet those changes. If a franchisee does not, he is in trouble. Plus the other challenge is, in the past years we’ve been having a very difficult [time] in financing. It’s very difficult for financing companies to get financing and it appears that the banks are starting to loosen up with financing and that should help a lot of franchisees who want to move forward in their business but need some capital.”
