An informal poll in your neighborhood would likely reveal that many residents hire professionals for home services.

And although some of your neighbors may perform the work themselves, most can’t tackle everything. The gap is made up by high-quality home services franchises.

A Wonderful Opportunity Exists in the Home Services Space

Let’s say you need to have a new side door installed and you can't or don't want to do it.

Normally, the first step in the process would be to “ask around.”

You call or text your friends, siblings, and/or neighbors to see if they know someone “good.”

Next, you get a name or two, and call them. And based on experience, here’s what happens next.

Your calls go to voicemail.

And if you received two referrals, you’re lucky if one of them calls back.

When the person does call back, after you give a brief description of what type of work needs to be performed, you get the price, and ask when said work can be started. Then, one of three things happens.

  1. The guy says he’ll look at his schedule and get back to you. He never does.
  2. The guy gives you the day he’ll be at your home to do the work (which may or may not include a time), and never shows up.
  3. He shows up, completes the work, and leaves.

In my own experience, #3 happens around 20% of the time.

And there is precisely where your opportunity exists.

That’s because in most cases, all your business needs to do to win customers and get a large number of referrals, is:

  1. Show up on time on the day promised.
  2. Do a good job.

The fact is, becoming the owner of a high-quality home services franchise can offer an opportunity to do that and a whole lot more.

And for consumers, those infuriating, time-wasting “no-shows” go the way of the dinosaur.

Home Services Franchises Free Up Valuable Time

As noted in the 2019 Franchise Direct Home Services Industry Report:

<blockquote>“For the longest time, paying for services was something that many people thought was only for wealthy (especially lawn maintenance and cleaning), but it seems this belief is quickly vanishing. In these busy times, people value the time they can spend with friends and family. When you hire a service professional what you are really buying is more time.” - Dave Ferris, Product Manager at Jobber

And while many things have changed since 2019, some things haven’t.

For instance, two incomes are often needed to support a decent lifestyle. That makes weekends off very precious.

If you’re in that situation, do you really want to spend your weekends cleaning, painting, or repairing things around the house? Or would you rather spend time doing things that are enjoyable?

Of course, you need to be able to afford to pay for these services, and although inflation (at the time of this writing) is high, household incomes are rising.

Franchises In The Home Services Space

If you’d like to explore franchise opportunities in home services, start by looking at the most popular types. They include:

  • Lawn Care
  • Heating & Air Conditioning
  • Plumbing
  • Pest Control
  • Residential Cleaning
  • Security System Installation
  • Handyman Services
  • Roofing
  • Remodeling

And more.

Now, here comes the good part.

Your initial investment for a home services franchise business opportunity is often reasonable. On average, you can expect to invest anywhere from $100k-$300k. That's not bad for a starting business, and it draws a lot of interest in the sector from prospective franchisees.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been at this for a long time (21+ years). As a result, I’ve been able to observe franchise industry trends. The winners. The losers. The steady eddies.

Without question, the home services segment of franchising has proven to be one of the steadiest in the industry.

Wisely, some of these franchises have started to branch out by offering services that complement what they are already doing. In fact, just the other day I saw a pest control company piping foam insulation into a home in my neighborhood. And that new service was advertised on their trucks and vans.

Finally, there is no guarantee you will be successful if you become a franchisee of a home services franchise business.

But if you do your homework, and feel the opportunity is the right one for you, you have a chance at success.

Specifically, a chance of taking more control of your future by being your own boss instead of reporting to one. Have you looked at franchise opportunities in home services yet?
