Note: Please provide accurate contact information and be sure to review your contact information before submitting the request info form, as any typos could delay or prevent a franchisor from getting in touch with you.

Doing a Self-Assessment
The number of distinct franchise opportunities available in the United States alone is closing in on 4,000! Of those, Franchise Direct maintains a list of hundreds of franchises that are seeking franchisees right now for you to get in touch with.
But how do you narrow down your options to a few choices? A self-assessment is a good place to start.
Recognizing your abilities, natural preferences, and limitations is the first step to success in any type of business. By having some clarity as to your goals, personality, and lifestyle desires, you’ll have a better idea of the most realistic options to achieve your ambitions. You’ll also eliminate wasting time on researching franchise choices not suited to your temperament and abilities.
To do a self-assessment, the following questions are a good starting point:
- Where do you want to be in five years? In 10 years?
- Can you stand being locked into a contract for 5, 10, 15 years?
- What activities (e.g. sports, computers, decorating, etc.) do you like to do?
- Would you prefer more physical or mental tasks?
- Can you keep yourself motivated on a day-to-day basis?
- Are you good at staying organized?
- Do you want to be outside, on-the-go, or working inside each day?
- Are you good at interacting with people?
- Is your family supportive of this venture? How will it impact their lives? What are your familial commitments currently and potentially in the future?
- How much do you want to spend?
- Do you have the resources to buy a franchise?
- How can you comfortably survive the initial business start-up phase before your franchise starts to turn a profit?
- What is your risk tolerance? How much of your assets are you willing to put on the line?
- What is your credit history? Can you raise financial backing?
Doing Due Diligence, or Researching, Franchise Opportunities
After your self-assessment you will have a better idea of the type of franchise you want to run. You should also know how much money you can invest, and how much of your time you can commit. Knowing these facts will help you choose the best possibilities from the many opportunities you’ll find.
Once you narrow down potential choices into your own personal franchise list, consider the following:
- Is it a franchise or a business opportunity?
- Does the franchisor belong to industry associations such as the International Franchise Association (IFA) or the American Association of Franchisees & Dealers (AAFD)?
- Is there a strong trademark name or brand?
- Are the products patented?
- How long has the franchised business been in operation? How many franchise units are there?
- If it is a new business, is it a fad that could quickly lose relevance? How has it been tested?
- What kind of support (management, technical, etc.) does the franchisor offer? Is there an additional cost?
- Does the territory offered by the franchisor have protections?
- What is the competition and how do prices of the product and services compare to competitors?
- Will the source of production materials be guaranteed in the future, if applicable?
- Does the franchisor disclose financial or other potentially helpful information?
While performing your research, there may be indications that a franchise offering is best avoided—if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is a misleading presentation.
Signs that a business is questionable include: unprofessional websites with a large amount of errors, and overly aggressive sales tactics that attempt to bully the prospective buyer into acting fast.
Millions of people have found opening a franchise business to be professionally rewarding, allowing for them to become business owners with the proven systems, back-up, training and support of franchise networks that have been through the process before and can show you the way.
